Swim spas are much larger than standard hot tubs, so their covers require different construction and careful attention to fit.
A properly built custom swim spa cover helps reduce heat loss, protects the spa from debris and weather, and provides a cover layout designed around the actual size and shape of the spa.
For large swim spas, fit and construction matter.
1. Proper Fit Helps Reduce Heat Loss
A large amount of heat can escape from the surface of an uncovered or poorly covered spa.
If a swim spa cover leaves gaps around the perimeter, no longer sits evenly, or has developed significant sagging, the heater may need to run more often to maintain the desired water temperature.
A custom swim spa cover is built to the actual dimensions and shape of the spa, including features such as:
- Overall length and width
- Corner radius
- Rounded or oval ends
- Cut corners
- Irregular shapes
- Special panel layouts
A proper fit provides full coverage and helps reduce unnecessary heat loss around the perimeter.
2. Large Swim Spas Require Stronger Construction
Swim spa covers span much larger areas than standard portable spa covers.
Because of their size, swim spa and oversized covers over 96 inches are built with Heavy Duty 2.0 lb foam.
The denser foam provides additional strength for the larger panels required on oversized spas.
Depending on the overall dimensions, a swim spa cover may require three-piece or four-piece construction.
Some large covers may also require a special center panel arrangement based on the total length and width of the spa.
3. The Vapor Barrier Is an Important Part of the Cover
The foam cores inside a spa cover are protected by a vapor barrier.
Its job is to help protect the foam from moisture and chemical vapor coming from the spa.
Once moisture enters the foam core, the cover can become heavier and lose insulating performance.
Our covers use the VPB3000 vapor barrier system. For spas with ozonators or aggressive water chemistry, double wrapping may also be recommended.
The performance of the cover depends on the complete construction, including the foam cores, vapor barrier, hinges, exterior material, seams, fit, and maintenance.
4. Multi-Piece Construction Makes Large Covers More Manageable
A large swim spa cover cannot always be built or handled like a standard two-panel hot tub cover.
The number of sections depends on the overall dimensions and shape of the spa.
Using the correct panel layout helps divide a large cover into more manageable sections while still providing full coverage.
For some swim spas, this may mean a three-piece cover. Larger models may require four pieces or a special center section.
5. Secure Tie-Downs Are Important
Swim spa covers can be equipped with locking tie-downs to help secure the cover when the spa is not in use.
It is important to understand the distinction between locking tie-downs and ASTM safety compliance.
Qualifying spa covers up to 96 inches can meet ASTM F1346-91 requirements when properly constructed and equipped with the required locking tie-downs.
Oversized and swim spa covers over 96 inches are not ASTM child-safety rated, although locking tie-downs are still available.
6. Custom Construction Matters for Unusual Shapes
Not every swim spa is a simple rectangle.
Some models have:
- Rounded ends
- Oval ends
- Large corner radiuses
- Unusual cut corners
- Irregular outlines
These covers must be built from accurate measurements or, in some cases, a template.

How Long Does a Swim Spa Cover Last?
A typical spa cover often lasts about 4 to 6 years.

- Maintenance
- How the cover is opened and handled
